Abstract
An improvement is disclosed of a process for reacting acrylic or methacrylic acid with a vicinal epoxide in the presence of a basic nitrogen compound to produce the corresponding hydroxy ester which comprises carrying out the reaction in the presence of a compound of the formula R--(NO.sub.2) as stabilizer in which R is a linear or branched alkyl or alkenyl or from 1 to 18 carbon atoms.
