Abstract

Oil soluble high molecular weight Mannich condensation products formed by reacting (1) high molecular weight alkyl-substituted hydroxy aromatic compounds whose alkyl-substituent has a number average molecular weight (Mn) from about 600-100,000, (2) a compound containing at least one HN < group, and (3) an aldehyde in the respective molar reactant ratio of 1:0.1-10:1.0-10, are highly efficient ashless type (metal free) dispersant-detergent lubricant oil addition agents. Lubricating oils containing these compositions provide a high degree of protection against the deposition of sludge and varnish and corrosion when used as crankcase lubricants. Bis-Mannich products prepared by condensing (1) a 850-2500 Mn polyalkyl-substituted phenol, (2) an alkylene polyamine and (3) formaldehyde in the respective molar ratio of 1.0:0.7-1.0:1.5-2.1 are novel products and are especially effective for high severity detergent-dispersant function over the extended oil drain range of crankcase lubricant oils recommended by automobile manufacturers.
