Abstract

Optical resolution of a dl-.alpha.-phenyl-.beta.-(lower alkylphenyl)ethylamine is carried out by reacting the dl-amine with L-aspartic acid to form diastereoisomeric salts, subjecting the same to fractional crystallization in a mixture composed of water and a water-miscible organic solvent, and decomposing the separated diastereoisomeric salt with a base individually. The thus obtained optically active .alpha.-phenyl-.beta.-(lower alkylphenyl)ethylamine is used as intermediates for the production of higher fatty acid amides having prominent cholesterol lowering activity.
