N-phenylcarbamoyl-4-methylpiperidine herbicides having the formula ##SPC1## Wherein R is a member selected from the group consisting of hydrogen and fluorine, compositions containing the same and the selective herbicidal method of use as a selective preemergence herbicide toward corn and a selective postemergence herbicide toward barley and, when R is H, toward corn.
