Abstract

7.beta.-Amino-3-methylceph-3-em-4-carboxylic acid is converted to cephalexin in high yield and relatively uncontaminated with unreacted 7.beta.-amino-3-methylceph-3-em-4-carboxylic acid if it is silylated prior to acylation with phenyl glycyl chloride hydrochloride and if the acylation reaction is conducted in dimethylformamide at low temperature in the presence of certain weak tertiary nitrogen bases.
