Abstract

.alpha.-Cyanobenzylpiperazines represented by the formula ##SPC1## Or an acid addition salt thereof, wherein R.sub.1 is a halogen or 1-3C lower alkoxy, R.sub.2 and R.sub.3 are each hydrogen or 1-3C lower alkoxy, R.sub.4 is 1-3C lower alkyl, and R.sub.5 is hydrogen or 1-3C lower alkyl, which are produced by reacting an aromatic carbonyl compound with hydrogen cyanide or a salt thereof and N-alkoxycarbonyl piperazine or an acid addition salt thereof.
