Abstract
A process for the preparation of a lower alkyl ester of a phthalic acid by contacting an ammonium salt of an aromatic carboxylic acid with vapors of a lower alkanol at a temperature between about 230.degree.C and about 300.degree.C in the presence of an alkaline esterification catalyst.
