Abstract

A system and method for configuring a vehicle service tool (VST) to operate in a first state in which a user-selectable control is operable for selecting a category of diagnostic descriptors to use when the VST operates in a second state; receiving, while the VST operates in the first state, a selection of the user-selectable control and configuring the VST to use the category of diagnostic descriptors when operating in the second state; configuring the VST to operate in the second state so that the VST displays a GUI and requests vehicle data messages; receiving, while the VST operates in the second state, vehicle data messages including a diagnostic identifier and corresponding data values determining, from among multiple diagnostic descriptors corresponding to the category of diagnostic descriptors, a diagnostic descriptor corresponding to the diagnostic identifier; and outputting, within the GUI, the diagnostic descriptor and a representation of the data values.
