Abstract

Methods for improving combustion stability in a gas generant for an inflatable restraint system are provided. S-type glass fibers are introduced into a mixture comprising at least one fuel and at least one oxidizer to form the gas generant. Each S-type glass fiber comprises silicon dioxide at ≥about 60% by mass, aluminum oxide at ≥about 20% by mass, and magnesium oxide at ≥about 9% by mass, and has a thermal softening point temperature (T) of greater than or equal to about 1,000° C. When the S-type glass fibers are absent, wherein the mixture exhibits flame extinguishment and/or reignition during combustion. However, combusting the gas generant comprising plurality of the S-type glass fibers is substantially free of flame extinguishment and/or reignition behavior and any associated pressure excursions. Gas generant compositions including the S-type glass fibers are also provided.
