Abstract

A circuit breaker device is used to control flow of electrical power from a first terminal connected to a power source to a second terminal connected to a load. A first electromagnet in the device is used to activate a trip mechanism and open a switch to disconnect the first terminal from the second, such as in response to a fault. The fault may be detected using dedicated circuitry or using one or more sensors. Once tripped, a manual reset is required. A second electromagnet is used to open the switch a smaller distance, without activating the trip mechanism, and to subsequently close the switch, in response to control commands. A latching mechanism may be used to retain the second electromagnet in a position that causes the switch to remain open until a subsequent command is received.
