Abstract
Presented is support for garbage collection inside a chunk. For instance an example method can comprise: determining whether small object data has been deleted from a physical storage location associated with an erasure coding strip, clearing a bit of a group of bits from a usage bitmap, wherein the bit represents the physical storage location of where the small object data is stored to the erasure coding strip, and the usage bitmap is associated with the erasure coding strip, determining that all bits of the group of bits representing an erasure coding segment of the erasure coding strip have not been cleared from the usage bitmap, executing a collapse garbage collection process within the erasure coding strip, and modifying a logical memory offset to a physical memory offset mapping based on a result of the performance of the collapse garbage collection process within the erasure coding strip.
