Abstract

One or more aspects of the present disclosure relate to extending solid-state drive (SSD) life in storage arrays through dynamic activity-based compression (ABC) thresholds. The system monitors SSD wear-out rates in primary and secondary storage arrays and independently adjusts ABC thresholds based on workload distributions and wear patterns. The primary array's ABC threshold dynamically adjusts between first and second thresholds for uncompressed hot data regions, while the secondary array may implement more aggressive compression due to lower performance requirements. Heatmap data transfers between arrays enable workload analysis and seamless failover capabilities. The system employs positive and negative feedback control loops to balance performance and wear reduction, throttling write operations through inline compression queuing when wear-out rates exceed targets while maintaining service levels. This approach reduces write amplification, enhances SSD endurance through optimized compression, and minimizes maintenance costs by decreasing SSD replacement frequency across deployments.
