Abstract
A method and system for synthesizing acoustics including its spatial content via modal analysis of a room or resonating object is described. In one embodiment of the inventive system, a parallel set of resonant mode filters is employed to simulate the effect of a room or resonating object acting on a source generating a signal at a source position, and picked up by a listener at a listener position. In the embodiment, each mode filter is driven by the source signal according to a mode source gain, and the mode filter outputs are summed according to mode listener gains to form a listener signal. In another embodiment, instantaneous arrival directions associated with the modes, and the source and listener positions are used to spatialize sound energy arriving at the listener from the source in the simulated acoustic over loudspeakers or headphones.
