Abstract

A parallel file system (PFS) can be enhanced with a vector database abstraction layer (VDAL) to manage both data objects and their corresponding vector embeddings. An associated metadata server can be employed to track how these data objects, embeddings, and vector indexes are organized, enabling parallel operations across multiple shards or nodes. The VDAL can store or generate embeddings in-band or out-of-band, build vector indexes using B-tree directories, and maintain ACID-compliant transactions for updates. By leveraging tagging, partial result merging, and load-balancing strategies, the VDAL can coordinate parallel ingestion and similarity queries in a unified, scale-out environment.
