Abstract

Provided is a method of determining a state of charge of refrigerant in a refrigeration system, the refrigeration system having a compressor, an expansion valve, a condenser side for passing refrigerant from the compressor to the expansion valve, and an evaporator side for passing refrigerant from the expansion valve to the compressor. The method comprises determining at least one performance characteristic of the refrigeration system when refrigerant is prevented from flowing into the evaporator side from the condenser side, and, when one or more predetermined criteria are met on the basis of the performance characteristic, determining a state of charge in the refrigeration system.
