Abstract
An externally toothed gear of a strain wave gearing is provided with external teeth, the tooth profile of which gradually changes along the tooth trace direction. The external teeth each includes an external tooth portion that is capable of meshing between internal teeth of an internally toothed gear, and an external tooth extension portion that does not mesh with the internal teeth. The external tooth extension portion has a tapered tooth profile that tapers off, and serves as a guide when each of the external teeth is inserted between the internal teeth. The tooth profile of the external tooth extension portion is slightly smaller than that of the external tooth portion, to which the external tooth extension portion is linked. The tooth profile does not protrude in the tooth depth direction or the tooth thickness direction from the tooth profile due to misalignment of a molding die.
