Abstract

A method for controlling auto-stop includes monitoring motion parameters of vehicles in a travel path, traffic control device information, or planned maneuver information; calculating a score based on a weighted combination of the monitored information, wherein the score represents a likelihood of imminent movement; comparing the score to a threshold to define a comparison; and controlling an auto-stop system of the host vehicle based on the comparison, wherein controlling includes maintaining an engine in an off state when an adaptive cruise control system is active and the score is below threshold, despite detected movement of a lead vehicle; initiating an engine restart request while the engine is in an auto-stop state and prior to release of a brake pedal when the score exceeds threshold, indicating an anticipated movement; or preventing engine shut-off when the host vehicle is approaching a stop and the exceeds threshold, indicating a predicted short stop duration.
