Abstract

An apparatus includes a selectable transmission configured to selectively couple a specified one of multiple spools of an aircraft engine to an electric machine. The selectable transmission include a mechanical output coupled to or forming a part of the electric machine, at least one clutch configured to drive or be driven by the mechanical output, and at least one selective actuator configured to move the at least one clutch in order to selectively control which spool drives or is driven by the mechanical output. The electric machine is configured to speed match the at least one clutch to one of the spools to facilitate engagement, and/or a synchronizer is configured to speed match the electric machine to one of the spools or to speed match two or more of the spools.
