Abstract
A display includes a transmissive spatial light modulator (SLM) with an active area and a privacy region of the active area smaller than the active area, a first backlight configured to illuminate the active area, and a second backlight positioned between the first backlight and the SLM. The second backlight has a film-based lightguide and one or more light sources configured to emit light into the film-based lightguide such that the light propagates to a light mixing region of the film-based lightguide positioned along an optical path between the one or more light sources and a light emitting region of the film-based lightguide. The light emitted from the light emitting region illuminates only the privacy region of the active area, wherein in a horizontal direction the light mixing region extends past the privacy region and extends less than a width of the active area.
