Abstract
Provided are methods of reducing insulin resistance and reducing total blood cholesterol levels in a subject in need thereof. Each method comprises parenterally administering a pharmaceutical composition comprising bone morphogenetic protein 10 (BMP10) as an active ingredient to the subject. In a high-fat-diet-induced obese animal model, parenteral administration of BMP10 significantly lowered fasting blood glucose and lowered insulin secretion relative to a control, confirming an improvement in insulin resistance, and significantly reduced total blood cholesterol levels relative to the control. The methods are useful for reducing insulin resistance and for reducing total blood cholesterol levels in the subject.
