Abstract

A binocular head-mounted augmented reality system comprising two identical display units, each with a pixelated display with a width of the emitting area in the range of 30 to 45 mm and a height in the range of 25 to less than 40 mm, and a pixel pitch in the range of 15-50 μm, where each display has a planar emissive surface in direct optical contact with a fiber optic faceplate so that an image emitted by the display passes through the faceplate and is emitted at a curved surface on the opposite end of the faceplate; and a curved semi-transparent visor having two reflective sections arranged to reflect the emitted image from each display unit towards the eyes so that the reflected images are combined into a single viewed image along with external light passing through the visor; and wherein the reflective sections each have a freeform surface whose surface elevations from a base plane change symmetrically on either side of a center line that runs through a center point in a first direction but changes asymmetrically on either side of a center line through the same center point in a second direction which is orthogonal to the first direction.
