Abstract

A cognitive distraction detection system for a driver of a vehicle and method is provided. The system includes a camera, a human machine interface (HMI), and a controller, which further includes a processor and a memory. The processor is programmed to receive from the driver a cognitive distraction threshold preference; determine whether physical traits of the driver indicate cognitive distraction; determine whether physiological traits of the driver indicate cognitive distraction; receive an indication of at least one vehicle dynamic of the vehicle; determine whether driving behavior indicates cognitive distraction of the driver; determine a driver cognitive distraction level; send an indication of the driver cognitive distraction to a human machine interface (HMI) of the vehicle; and create an alert to the driver using the human machine interface (HMI).
