Abstract

A fuel cell assembly includes first and second flow field plates sandwiching a multilayer membrane electrode assembly having first and second electrodes and a membrane. Each flow field plate has a flow field structure protruding from a base level for distributing reactant. A sealing element between the plates prevents leakage of reactants. In a boundary area between the flow field structure and the sealing element, the first flow field plate has a first bypass stopping element with a pointed portion, and the second flow field plate has a second bypass stopping element with a blunt portion. The first and second bypass stopping elements are arranged opposite each other to form a bypass stopping element assembly, wherein the blunt portion is adapted to be indented by the pointed portion, which compresses the multilayer membrane electrode assembly to avoid reactant bypassing the flow field structure.
