Abstract
Embodiments relate to an optimal technique for building indexes on databases. Aspects include receiving a request to build a new index for a column in a table, determining that an existing index includes the column requested in the request, and extracting the record identifiers associated with the column from the existing index. Aspects include building the new index as a data structure comprising the record identifiers extracted from the existing index without parsing the table.
