Abstract

A neutron monitoring system includes an entrance window that enables neutrons to penetrate the system while attenuating some undesired signals and/or radiation. A neutron reactive medium integrated with the entrance window functions as a neutron conversion layer that transform one or more neutron strikes against the reactive media to carrier signals that represents a neutron incidence. Semiconductor junctions absorb the carrier signals creating electron-hole pairs that have drift rates in a sub-nanosecond charge transit range and render pulses in response to each neutron detection. Neutron reactive layers serve as a cathode in a two parallel plates avalanche chamber design. The charged particles are converted into primary electrons through a gas medium and amplified by an internal gas multiplication effect for the registration of individual neutrons. A neutron registration circuit amplifies and conditions the pulses to record intensity measurements and localization measurements.
