Abstract
A bearing component includes an internal core of piezoelectric material for harvesting mechanical energy. The bearing component has the internal core of piezoelectric material extending circumferentially about an entirety of the bearing component, an insulating layer surrounding the internal core of piezoelectric material, and an external shell surrounding the insulating layer and enclosing the internal core of piezoelectric material and the insulating layer. One arrangement includes a p-type material and an n-type material contacting opposing portions of the internal core of piezoelectric material to act as an internal power generation mechanism that is isolated from the external shell of the bearing component by an insulating layer. Another arrangement includes an inner alpha layer surrounding the internal core of piezoelectric material, a beta layer surrounding the inner alpha layer, and a gamma layer surrounding the beta layer and in contact with the insulating layer.
