Abstract

A recreational vehicle includes an electromagnetic braking system, an inertial measurement unit (IMU), and a vehicle controller configured to identify a fault condition of the recreational vehicle. The vehicle controller also determines a target velocity trajectory to bring the vehicle to a controlled stop with an average deceleration less than a threshold. The vehicle controller determines a pulse signal for the electromagnetic braking system based on the target velocity trajectory and a current velocity. The period of the pulse signal includes a first time duration where the brake is engaged and a second time duration where the brake is released. The vehicle controller adjusts the first or second time duration based on a pitch measurement from the IMU before being applied to the electromagnetic braking system. If the vehicle is moving uphill the second time duration is increased. If the vehicle is moving downhill the first time duration is increased.
