Abstract

In one general embodiment, a method includes positioning a read transducer of a magnetic head at an initial position over a data track on a magnetic recording tape using servo information derived from servo reader signals. A reading characteristic is measured during reading of the data track. The position of the magnetic head relative to the data track is sequentially changed. The reading characteristic is measured during reading of the data track at the changed positions. Information derived from the measured reading characteristic and the positions of the magnetic head is assembled into a data set. The data set is processed to create a read offset corresponding to a final position approximately geometrically centered within the data track. The read offset is stored in a memory.
