Abstract

A current and resistance sensor includes a photo-induced-voltage-generating solution chamber for receiving a photoreceptor-protein-containing solution; and a compound layer on one side of the photo-induced-voltage-generating solution chamber. The compound layer is responsive to changes in the amount of protons in the solution, and the compound layer is provided with a gap that is an electrically insulating discontinuity aligned with and spanning the photo-induced-voltage-generating solution chamber, such that the compound layer is divided into electrically independent portions, and changes in the amount of protons in the solution result in a detectable change in electrical current and/or resistance measured between the electrically independent portions across the gap.
