Abstract
A vehicle includes an engine and an aftertreatment system. The aftertreatment system includes a passive nitrogen oxides adsorber (PNA) that stores nitrogen oxides (NOx) below a first release temperature and oxidizes hydrocarbons (HC) and carbon monoxide (CO) above a first light-off temperature an electric heater (EHC), and a selective catalytic reduction (SCR) catalyst. The vehicle includes data processing hardware that performs operations including operating the engine to heat the PNA to a first temperature range that is above the first light-off temperature and below the first release temperature, operating the engine to maintain the PNA within the first temperature range while activating the EHC to heat the SCR catalyst to a second temperature range that is at or above a second light-off temperature, and operating the engine to heat the PNA to a third temperature range that is at or above the first release temperature.
