Abstract
Structural color devices having high chromaticity and vivid color generation include a resonator cavity with multilayer stack having a first layer comprising a light absorbing material, a second layer comprising a low refractive index layer, and a third layer comprising a high refractive index layer. An ultrathin high refractive index layer may be disposed between the first and second layers in alternative variations. The structural color device has one or more of: (i) a chromaticity 'C' of greater than or equal to about 90; (ii) a difference of a decay rate of intrinsic resonator absorption (γ) of the resonator cavity and a decay rate of radiative loss (γ) of the resonator cavity is less than or equal to about 25%; or both (i) and (ii).
