Abstract
A battery-powered work machine includes a control system for determining a threshold state of charge for the battery at which to seek instruction from an operator whether to precondition the battery for a Fast Charge. The control system evaluates various current parameters in the machine, such as battery cell temperature, ambient temperature, battery state of health, battery size, and capacity of a battery thermal management system, to determine an expected change in the state of charge caused by preconditioning the battery. A buffer amount of charge is added to define the threshold state of charge. When the threshold exceeds a current state of charge for the battery, the control system provides notification via an operator interface for an operator to elect or refuse a Fast Charge with battery preconditioning.
