A cloud managed storage system () includes a cluster of the nodes () that are already in communication with a cloud management plane () that has visibility of all the storage nodes () in the cluster. When a cluster is created, the number of nodes () is determined and based on the number of nodes (), the storage system () can determine whether an external quorum witness () is required and automatically enable a quorum witness () as a cloud service. Storage nodes () can contact the quorum witness () when necessary for failover processes.
