Abstract
A sheet identification device includes a light irradiation portion. When forming an identification image (Im), the light irradiation portion projects, on an identification region (R), pattern light (P) including a vertical component (C) along a conveying direction (D) of a sheet and a horizontal component (C) orthogonal to the vertical component (C). The identification image (Im) is an image of the identification region (R) of the surface of the sheet on which image formation or image reading is performed, and is used for identifying surface information on the state of the surface of the sheet.
