Abstract
An exhaust system architecture provides a coordinated control approach that considers aspects of the involved aftertreatment components. An aftertreatment system under this architecture includes a conduit system that conveys an exhaust gas stream from the engine to atmosphere. A diesel oxidation catalyst unit is disposed in the conduit system. A selective catalyst reduction unit is disposed in the conduit system downstream from the DOC unit. A passive NOx absorber unit is disposed in the conduit system downstream from the DOC unit at a location that is disposed at a distance from the engine. The distance is effective to, following a cold start of the engine, enable the SCR unit to heat to a conversion threshold temperature before the PNA unit heats to a release threshold temperature.
