Abstract
A system can be used to facilitate an automated tripping operation. The system can include a tubular and a subsystem. The tubular can be positioned in a wellbore. The subsystem, such as a data acquisition device, can be coupled with the tubular to track a linear displacement of the tubular in the wellbore for controlling the automated tripping operation in the wellbore. The subsystem can include a set of rollers and a set of encoders. The set of rollers can be positioned in rotational contact with the tubular. The set of encoders can be positioned adjacent to the tubular to provide multi-dimensional information about the tubular in the wellbore.
