Abstract
A power tool includes a housing, and a brushless direct current (DC) motor within the housing. The brushless DC motor includes a rotor, a stator, and a motor shaft. The power tool also includes an impact mechanism including a hammer coupled to the motor shaft and an anvil configured to receive impacts from the hammer. The anvil includes an anvil shaft having a circumference and a relief feature provided on the anvil shaft. The relief feature has an edge profile that extends along the circumference of the anvil shaft and varies in an axial direction of the anvil shaft. An anvil sensor is positioned adjacent the relief feature and is configured to sense a physical characteristic of the relief feature. A controller is connected to the anvil sensor and configured to control the brushless DC motor based on the physical characteristic.
