Abstract

Methods, systems, and devices for wireless communications are described. In a wireless communications system, a user equipment (UE) may receive an indication of a configuration (e.g., via control signaling) of a set of reconfigurable intelligent surfaces (RISs). The UE may select a primary RIS for bidirectional wireless communication (e.g., uplink and downlink) and one or more secondary RISs for unidirectional (e.g., uplink) wireless communication based on the configuration. The UE may use the one or more secondary RISs to enable higher throughput and extended coverage in the wireless communication system. The UE may communicate with the base station using the primary RIS, or the secondary RIS, or both.
