Abstract
A display device () includes an expander device (EPE) to form output light (OUT) by diffractively expanding input light (IN) that includes input light beams (B, B) representing an input image (IMG). The output light (OUT) includes output light beams (B, B) representing the input image (IMG). The expander device (EPE) includes: a waveguide plate (SUB), a diffractive in-coupling element (DOE) to couple the input light (IN) into the waveguide plate (SUB), a diffractive out-coupling element (DOE) to form the output light (OUT) by diffracting guided light (B, B) out of the waveguide plate (SUB). The out-coupling element (DOE) includes buried diffractive ridges (PR) and complementing regions (FIL) between the ridges (PR), the buried diffractive ridges (PR) have a first refractive index (n), the complementing regions (FIL) have a second different refractive index (n). A slant angle (θ) of the ridges (PR) is in a range of 20° to 70°.
