A continuous inkjet printerhas a drop generator, an ink source, an ink feed linedelivering ink from the ink sourceto the drop generator, a solvent source, a solvent feed linedelivering solvent from the solvent sourceto the drop generator, a flush valvecontrolling a flow of solvent through the solvent feed line, a source of negative pressure, a wash valveconnecting the ink feed lineto the source of negative pressure, and a controller controlling the valves, the solvent feed lineand the ink feed lineforming a junction where ink and solvent meet at an interface, and the controller, when shutting down the printer, controls the wash valveand flush valveto draw solvent into the ink feed linefrom the solvent feed lineto draw the interface along the ink feed lineaway from the drop generator
