Abstract

A rotor () for a permanent magnet electrical machine comprises a hub () having a central rotational reference axis, and first and second sets () of rotor segments (). Each segment includes at least one permanent magnet (), with the permanent magnets of the first set offset in the circumferential direction relative to the permanent magnets of the second set, and an engagement portion () shaped to engage mechanically with the hub so as to resist radial forces, and having a radially extending central axis () in a plane extending perpendicular to the central rotational reference axis. In each rotor segment of the first set, the centre of mass of its magnet(s) is circumferentially offset from the central axis of the respective engagement portion, and the segment is shaped such that the centre of mass () of the segment is substantially aligned with the central axis () of the respective engagement portion.
