Abstract
A gateway or a network adapter allows legacy devices to be connected to a distributed database system such as a blockchain without having to change any configuration. Unique cryptographic data is associated with the gateway I network adapter. To improve the availability of the coupling, an additional gateway or additional network adapter with identical cryptographic data is provided, wherein never both couplings are simultaneously active for preventing replications or ensuring the uniqueness of the cryptographic data. The availability of the active coupling is monitored using a state synchronization channel. Alternatively, the monitoring can also be effected by a test whether data sent by the legacy devices are successfully stored within a certain period of time or number of data blocks in the blockchain. In the event of an interference of the active coupling, the previously inactive gateway I network adapter assumes the coupling of the legacy devices and the blockchain.
