Abstract

A method of electrochemically forming methanol from methane using a fuel cell. The fuel cell includes an anode chamber including an anode including a catalyst that includes carbon-doped γ-FeOnanoparticles disposed on a graphite felt support and an anode solution including water and methane, a cathode chamber including a cathode and a cathode solution including water, and a proton exchange membrane separating the anode chamber and the cathode chamber. The method includes supplying methane to the anode, applying a voltage to the fuel cell, and collecting methanol from the anode solution.
