Abstract
Multiple virtual disk instances are created, each of which is a virtual machine. Each one of the virtual disk instances aggregates non-volatile data storage of cloud storage volumes that are directly attached to it into a single logical volume. A sub-network is created that connects the virtual disk instances to a network interface of each one of storage controllers of a virtual storage appliance. The storage controllers consume the logical volumes of non-volatile data storage corresponding to the virtual disk instances over the subnetwork, in order to persistently store received user data thereon. The cloud storage volumes are each capable of being attached to only a single virtual machine, and are attached to the virtual disk instances through data storage interfaces of the virtual disk instances.
