Abstract

Embodiments are directed to a metal-ligand complex catalyst precursor, (L)(L)X(R)(R), and methods for producing the same from a compound of formula QX(R)(R). Land Lare independently —R—Zor —R—Z. Rand Rare independently selected from a hydrogen atom, (C-C)hydrocarbyl and, optionally, Rand Rare connected to form a ring having from 3 to 50 atoms in the ring, excluding hydrogen atoms. X is Si, Ge, Sn, or Pb. Each Q is independently Ar—YR— or Ar—Y—R—. Rand Rare independently selected from —(CR)—, where m is 1 or 2, and where each Ris independently selected from the group consisting of (C-C)hydrocarbyl, (C-C)heterohydrocarbyl, and —H. Yand Yare independently S, Se, or Te. Arand Arare independently (C-C)aryl. Ar—Y—R— and Ar—Y—R— are not identical. Each Zis independently selected from Cl, Br, and I.
