A pet food composition contains protein, carbohydrates, fat, fiber, and at least 6 distinct metabolites. The at least 6 distinct metabolites include first and second metabolites for modulating bone mineral content, third and fourth metabolites for modulating 25(OH) vitamin D3, and fifth and sixth metabolites for modulating 1,25(OH)vitamin D3 in a companion animal.
