Abstract

An object of the present invention is to provide a carbonaceous material from which an electrochemical device having a high initial electrostatic capacitance, an excellent effect of suppressing gas generation during charging and discharging, and excellent durability can be obtained, and a method for producing the carbonaceous material, an electrode active material for an electrochemical device containing the carbonaceous material, an electrode for an electrochemical device containing the electrode active material, and an electrochemical device. The present invention relates to a carbonaceous material having a BET specific surface area of 1550 to 2500 m/g, a value of an oxygen content/hydrogen content per specific surface area of 1.00 to 2.10 mg/m, and an electrical conductivity of 10 to 15 S/cm determined by powder resistance measurement at a load of 12 kN.
