The adhesives described herein have widespread commercial applicability as a compostable alternative to current non-biodegradable adhesives such as, for example, pressure sensitive adhesives. In one aspect, the polyester includes a plurality of residues of a diol selected from the group consisting of 1,3-propanediol, 1,4-butanediol, or a combination thereof; a plurality of residues of a first dicarboxylic consisting of succinic acid; a plurality of residues of a second dicarboxylic consisting of glutaric acid; and a plurality of residues of a sugar.
