Abstract

An electrically heatable aerosol-generating device to heat an aerosol-forming substrate is provided, the device including: a receiving cavity to removably receive an aerosol-generating article including the substrate; an electrical heater to heat the substrate when the article is received in the cavity; and a state detector to detect a presence of at least one specific state in the cavity and including a radiation emitter to emit radiation into the cavity, and a radiation sensor to detect a portion of the emitted radiation being reflected from an interior of the cavity and indicative of the presence of the specific state, the emitter and the sensor are arranged outside the cavity such that the emitter and the sensor are not in fluid communication with the interior of the cavity, and at least a part of the detector is arranged close to or adjacent to a distal end portion of the cavity.
