Abstract
A method for forming an oxygen reduction reaction (ORR) catalyst () may include providing a carbon () supported platinum nanoparticle () substrate (Pt/C) () and applying a tungsten nitride (WN) film () onto the surface of the Pt/C substrate () using atomic layer deposition (ALD) (). The Pt/C substrate () with the WN film () may then be oxidized at a low temperature () and annealed at a high temperature in order to reduce WN to metallic tungsten (W) (). The metallic W forms a blocking layer () over coarse Pt nanoparticles () and improves the activity and the durability of the Pt/C catalyst () when used in fuel cells or related applications.
